It is regarded as the most peaceful and silent province in Sicily, but it is also the more internal in comparison to the others. I am speaking about Enna, a very ancient Sicilian city which is also one district or province with 20 towns (or comuni). Enna is distant from the sea, but you can visit it when you desire to live a calm and silent journey in Sicily. The History of Enna is very ancient and dates from the Roman Empire. In the Middle Age, Enna was conquered by Muslims and later by the Normans. In the Middle Age, Enna also became a flourishing Byzantine stronghold.
What you can see in Enna is its endless countryside, maybe one the largest in Sicily. In the past, many countryside areas were abandoned, only recently, due to the Italian economic crisis, many agricultural companies are coming back to grow the lands in Enna. This city is famous for cereal cultivations. Many restaurants and resorts arise right in the middle of the green countryside. In Enna you can admire only few monuments and churches in comparison with other Sicilian cities, but what you can see is really unforgettable.
In Enna, the main tourist interest sites are Piazza Armerina, Morgantina ( see the image) and Pergusa lake. Piazza Armerina hosts the famous Roman Villa of Casale (Villa Romana del Casale), one the largest archaeological sites of Roman remains. Morgantina is also relevant on the archeological side, this area, included in the city of Aidone, is an archaeological Roman site rising on the hill placed in eastern central Sicily. Both Villa Romana del Casale and Morgantina are a very interesting report of the habits, customs and worships of the ancient Romans. Inside the Villa, you can see stunning images painted with the mosaic technique, while in Morgantina, high stones and columns shape a temple devoted to a female deity known as Venere of Morgantina ( La Venere di Morgantina). Unfortunately, these places are not properly advertised around the world, they are, however, very attractive and enticing.
Lake Pergusa ( see the first image) is placed among the chain of Erei’s mountains. It is a flourishing natural reserve with a lake which feeds several species of birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. An important race track lies around the lake. That is the International Autodromo which also hosted important car races like Formula 3. In Enna, the weather is Mediterranean, like in entire Sicily, but thanks to its green countryside, you can enjoy fresh and chilly nights. In the winter, rarely you can find snow, and in this case, Enna becomes wonderful. Resorts, hotels and other tourist buildings are equipped to offer you any kind of vacation. Most of them are farm businesses, where you can also do equitation and eat tasty typical Sicilian foods.
Many farms are also equipped with pool, to let you enjoy a funny swim during the hot Sicilian summer. I suggest that you also admire the endless and stunning countryside in Enna, it is really interesting to be breathed and lived. After visiting Enna, you can never forget the scent of its countryside. I’ll speak better of these wonderful places in Enna in other posts.
Enna hotels and accommodations
In my view, Enna is the most picturesque and archeological city of Sicily. There is no sea and not even beaches, but all of the stillness of the Sicilian landscape. It is a green and lush city that you should absolutely visit during your vacation in Sicily, especially to taste the organic food grown in its endless countryside. In the city and the province, hotels and accommodations mirrors the style and the charm of the Sicilian countryside. To reserve pretty accommodations in Enna, you can see this link.

My family is from Calascibetta, just to the north of Enna.
Hi Marc, sorry for my late reply, but I am writing another post about another Sicilian destination these days.
Thank you so much for sharing information about your family.
Many families left Calascibetta in the past century to search for a better future abroad and I am very happy to provide them with useful information about our beloved Sicily.

Great information. Without your passion many people would not know anything about the roots of their ancestors from Sicily. My grandmothers family was from Piazza Armernina (Catalano was the last name) I guess in the early 1900’s this was a very poor area. Thank you for your work. God bless
May God bless you, dear James. Your words are the proof that passion can be very helpful, every now and then.
Thanks a lot for sharing information about your Sicilian roots with me.
